Another Death by a Distracted Tractor Trailer Driver

Norfolk, Newport News, and Roanoke, Virginia

In June 2014, the news headlined a horrific accident on the New Jersey Turnpike involving comedian Tracey Morgan. The driver of the truck did not observe slower moving traffic ahead, and rear-ended Tracey Morgan’s limo. One person inside the limo was killed, the driver is being charged with one count of death by automobile and an additional four counts of assault by automobile.

Closer to home in Albemarle County on I-64 the Virginia State Police are investigating an accident which left two people dead and two injured yesterday. A tractor trailer and a vehicle collided in the westbound lanes, this was another scenario were the driver of a tractor trailer did not observe the slow moving traffic ahead and crashed. This time it was a Nissan Pathfinder, which pushed into a Lincoln Town Car. A Chevrolet Suburban was also hit and turned over and hit another tractor trailer, which caused the Lincoln Town Car to catch fire.

The driver of the Lincoln Town Car, Vicki L. Shields, died at the scene. The passenger in the Chevrolet Suburban was ejected during the rollover and later died after being transported to the hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban was not injured, but another passenger, in the SUV did sustain some injuries. Kelsey A. Lesslick of Zion Crossroads, driving the Nissan Pathfinder was airlifted to UVA Medical Center, in Richmond, for serious injuries.

The press release from the Virginia State Police stated “the driver of the flatbed tractor trailer, James, J. Nagy, was charged with reckless driving. Additional charges are pending and the ongoing investigation."
