Team On The Town

Norfolk, Newport News, and Roanoke, Virginia

New Year’s Eve, Super Bowl Sunday and St. Patrick’s Day American Law Enforcement is always faced with increased roadway incidents caused by drunk drivers. In 2013, 10,076 people died in drunk-driving crashes - one every 52 minutes - and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration FARS data, 2014. http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/812102.pdf.

Per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 31% of all driving fatalities in 2012 were the result of drunk driving, and 43% of driving fatalities on the day of the big game were caused by drunk driving. We don’t want you to be a statistic. The team here at Kalfus & Nachman partnered with other organizations to make sure your safe getting home on some of the most celebrated nights of the year.

Kalfus & Nachman Stomps Out Hunger

This year the employees of Kalfus & Nachman doubled their annual donation to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Over the past four years the average donation was 4,800 pounds, however this year the staff generously donated 10,234 pounds - the equivalent of 7,995 meals - that will go to needy families in Hampton Roads.

Our employees rallied behind Senior Legal Assistant Penny Ash, who coordinates the annual event with the Foodbank. We are very pleased with this year’s outcome. We are proud that our employees were so engaged and excited about the opportunity to contribute to such a needy cause.

The Foodbank was also buzzing with talk about this food drive last Wednesday. The truck driver assigned to the pick-up excitedly took a picture with his camera phone and sent it to the warehouse manager to request additional assistance and dollies. They had no idea Kalfus & Nachman had collected that much food, shared Danielle Ayers, Grants and Communications Manager for Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. “We are always excited about Kalfus & Nachman’s generous food drives,” said Renee Figurelle, Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia COO. “This year’s donation is overwhelming. It will feed so many in our region who need help this holiday season.”

HOW DID WE PULL IT OFF?

The employees competed in three teams. Each food item collected had a corresponding point value, with the highest value going to the most needed items. Examples of food items with the highest point values included canned meats (Chicken and Tuna) for 30 points and canned vegetables at 5.1lbs. or heavier receiving 50 points.

Teams also earned incentive points if cases of canned goods were donated. This effort encouraged staff to purchase cases of like items, allowing for ease of storage and transportation of the items during the collection process.

The winning team was awarded an extra paid day off to be taken at the end of this year.
