For such a popular off-road vehicle, the Yamaha Rhino All-Terrain Vehicle has certainly seen its fair share of problems. For years, these ATV’s have been popular sport, recreational and utility vehicles designed specifically for difficult rugged terrain. In terms of size and ability, the Rhino ATV is somewhere between a regular-sized ATV and a Jeep Wrangler. But since they came on the market, they have gained quite the reputation for rollover accidents due to manufacturing and design defects.

On March 31, 2009, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in cooperation with Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. announced a free repair program to address the safety issues associated with the following Rhino ATV models: 450, 660, and 700. Yamaha has also agreed to suspend sales of these models until repaired.

The CPSC has investigated more than 50 incidents and 46 driver and passenger deaths in these Rhino models. To date, approximately 120,000 of these vehicles have been distributed across the country. Consumers must stop using these vehicles immediately until the repair is made by the manufacturer.

Once consumers have gotten the repairs made, they should always wear their helmets and seatbelts and drive or ride according to express-written rules. The Yamaha Rhino ATV is intended for people age 16 or over and who have a valid driver’s license. Also, all passengers need to be tall enough to be able to place both feet on the floorboard and keep their back against the seat.
