Peanut Butter Recall / Salmonella Outbreak

Recently, there has been an outbreak of salmonella across the country. This bacteria is the most common cause of food poisoning in America. Victims of salmonella frequently experience diarrhea, cramping, and fever that can last for several days. So far, over 470 people have become sick, and six people have died from this salmonella outbreak.

Contaminated Peanut Butter Products

The salmonella outbreak has been associated with peanut butter products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently linked the outbreak to a Peanut Corporation of America plant in Blakely, Georgia. The contaminated products are all made from peanut butter and peanut paste produced at the plant. The Peanut Corporation's headquarters is in Lynchburg, VA at 2121 Wiggington Road.

The FDA has warned people across the country to avoid cookies, ice cream, cakes, and other foods made with peanut butter until the salmonella outbreak is under control. While many products made with peanut butter and peanut paste seem to be contaminated, it appears that the peanut butter sold in jars has not been affected.

Many companies using peanut products made by Peanut Corporation of America have voluntarily recalled their products as a precautionary measure. Some of the products recalled include:

  • Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies
  • Keebler Cheese & Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers
  • Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies
  • Little Debbie Peanut Butter Crackers
  • Clif Bar (peanut butter bars only)
  • Luna Bar (peanut butter bars only)
  • LARABAR Peanut Butter Cookie

To be safe, you should avoid all peanut butter products until further warning. If you have any of the above-mentioned products in your house, you can contact your local grocery store about returning these products.
