Painkiller Darvon and Darvocet Pulled from US Markets
Tuesday, November 30th, 2010
FDA, U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced that Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals the maker of Darvon and Darvocet -voluntarily withdraw these painkillers the from US markets. The active ingredient propoxyphene, “has recently completed new clinical trails that was designed to assess the impact on the electrical activity of the heart,” Dr. John Jenkins, director of FDA’s Office of New Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. The trail showed propoxyphene can cause potentially serious or even deadly heart rhythm, alled arrhythmias, he said. “We concluded the pain benefits of propoxphene no longer outweighted the heart risk and that propoxyphene should no longer be sold in the United States.” Jenkins said. The FDA has also asked that generic versions of the drug be withdrawn. In 2009, approximately 10 million people in the US were taking propoxyphene.

Pedestrain Safety this Holiday Season
Monday, November 29th, 2010
With the holidays upon us, please be careful not only in your vehicle but as a pedestrian in mall parking lots and crossing busy streets. Pedestrians are supposed to have the right-of-way in parking lots but many drivers don’t wait for pedestrians. Parking lots can be more hazardous than streets. On streets the direction of traffic is usually known but in parking lots vehicles might be moving in all directions.
What are the major types of pedestrian traffic accidents?
The major crash types most often associated with pedestrian accidents are:
- Pedestrians darting out mid-block in front of a vehicle.
- Running from one side of the intersection to the other.
- A vehicle turning from one street onto another.
- Vehicles backing up.
Here are some helpful tips for a safe shopping experience…
1. Avoid texting while walking/ remember to use hands free devices when talking on the phone.
2. Please remove ipods or any device from your ears while crossing (emergency vehicles could be in the area)
3. Do not cross in front of cars with reverse lights illuminated.
4. Walk defensively and prepare for the unexpected.
Happy Holidays from Kalfus and Nachman.

Consumer Alert - FDA warns consumers not to use Vigor-25
Monday, November 29th, 2010
NOV-19-10: FDA: NEWS RELEASES
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating the reported death of a 26-year old man, possibly associated with the use of Vigor-25. The FDA says Vigor-25, a product marketed as a natural dietary supplement to enhance male sexual performance, should not be purchased or used because it contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Viagra.
Sildenafil may interact with prescription drugs known as nitrates, including nitroglycerin, and can dangerously lower blood pressure.
“This product is dangerous to consumers because it claims to contain only natural ingredients when it actually contains a prescription drug ingredient,” said Deborah M. Autor, director of the Office of Compliance in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Tainted products place consumers at risk of injury and death, especially those consumers with underlying health conditions.”
Vigor-25, distributed by Piston Corp., is sold on Internet sites and possibly in some retail outlets.
If you are a loved one have been injured please call Kalfus and Nachman for a consultation today.

SOCIAL SECURITY News Release Social Security Fast-Track Disability Processes Get Even Faster
Monday, November 29th, 2010
On November 12, 2024 The Social Security Administration announced new rules - accessible through the Federal Registry online - that will enable what it calls America’s “most vulnerable citizens” to qualify more quickly for Social Security Disability benefits.
Those eligible to have their applications fast-tracked will be those persons with the most severe disabilities. Under the agency’s Quick Disability Determination (QDD) and Compassionate Allowance (CAL) processes, 88 specific diseases and conditions have been identified as qualifying for fast-track treatment without the need for medical approval or the input of psychological consultants.
In some cases this will process will not be a benefit, specifically persons suffering from strokes.
As claims continue to outpace prior year the time delays and other exactions placed upon most claimants.
When applying for Social Security Disability most applicants are routinely rejected early in the process and are denied again upon reconsideration. Many never appeal.
Statistics show, though, that an applicant who retains an experienced Social Security disability attorney stands a much higher chance of securing benefits, with the lawyer knowing how to process the myriad forms and paperwork and represent a client at a hearing before an administrative law judge.
