Peanut Butter Recall

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has announced it is conducting a very active investigation into the source of the recent Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak. The FDA has traced a source of the contamination to a plant owned by the Peanut Corporation of America; this plant manufactures peanut butter and peanut paste.
The peanut butter Peanut Corp makes peanut butter that is served in long-term care institutions and cafeterias. The peanut paste, which is a concentrated product that consists of ground roasted peanuts, is distributed to food manufacturers for use in cakes, cookies, crackers, candy, cereal and ice cream. Samples taken from the Peanut Corp’s Blakely, Georgia plant have tested positive for this strain of Salmonella. Samples of King Nut peanut butter are a match to the strain of Salmonella that has caused sickness all around the country. The Peanut Corporation’s headquarters is in Lynchburg, VA at 2121 Wiggington Road.
On January 16, 2009, Peanut Corp of America expanded its voluntary recall to include all peanut butter produced on or after August 8, 2024 and all peanut paste produced on or after September 26, 2024 in its Georgia plant.
The FDA recommends that consumers avoid eating products that are part of the recall; they should be discarded. The FDA also urges consumers to not eat commercially-prepared or manufactured peanut butter-containing products and institutionally-served peanut butter until further notice.
The Kellogg company confirmed Monday, January 19, 2024 that salmonella was found in a single package of its peanut butter crackers. The Battle Creek, Wisconsin plant announced that the FDA confirmed that the FDA found salmonella in a single package of Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers with Peanut Butter. Kellogg, the world’s largest cereal maker, has recalled Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies, Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Cheese & Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers. Kellogg recalled over seven million cases of these popular snacks.
At the time of this writing, General Mills Inc., Kroger Co., Safeway Inc. and Meijer Inc. joined the growing list of food companies pulling items from the shelves items containing peanut butter.
