Types and Severity of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Traumatic brain injuries, caused by head trauma that damages your brain, range from mild to severe. These types of brain injuries are more common than you may think: more than 1.4 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year.

At the Virginia personal injury law firm of Kalfus & Nachman, we provide financial and emotional support for victims and victims’ families. We know that this is a difficult time and we will do everything in our power so that you are fairly compensated for your brain injury.

Penetrating and Closed Head Brain Injuries

TBIs fall into two categories: penetrating and closed head. With a penetrating injury, an object punctures your skull, causing damage to your brain. Closed head injuries are caused by trauma to your head that drives your brain into your skull. These are often caused by motor vehicle accidents, blows to the head and contact sports.

Severity of TBIs

Mild TBIs are the most common type. You may not consciousness with a mild TBI, so these injuries are often misdiagnosed or missed at the initial time of injury. Severe TBIs can cause you to lose consciousness for anywhere from 20 minutes to putting you in a coma for weeks or months. Symptoms of both TBIs range from headaches and memory loss to seizures and cognitive impairments.

If you have suffered a TBI and you live in the Norfolk, Hampton, Newport News, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach or Roanoke, Virginia area, please contact the Virginia brain injury lawyers at Kalfus & Nachman to schedule a free consultation.
