Meridia, as with the diet drugs Pondimin and Redux that were recalled
in 1997 for causing heart valve damage, affects the release of a brain
chemical called serotonin. Pondimin and Redux (part of the drug combination
popularly known as Fen-Phen) sought to fool the brain by making patients
feel full through boosting production of serotonin. Meridia tries an
opposite approach, slowing the body's dissipation of the serotonin
the brain naturally produces.
Meridia is the brand name of the popular diet drug sibutramine, and
is manufactured by Abbott Laboratories. It is estimated that nine million
people worldwide have taken Meridia for the treatment of obesity and
to promote weight loss since it was introduced to the market in 1998.
On March 19, 2002, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen requested
that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) immediately recall Meridia
on the basis of serious side effects, including its reported linkage
to the deaths of 34 patients worldwide.
